Pigmentation and
Age Spot Removal
Melanin protects us from any burns or damage caused by sun exposure and UV rays. The more we are exposed to the sun, the more melanin we produce. In Singapore, where it is constantly sunny, we have a bigger chance of having hyperpigmentation, freckles, aged spots, or melasma over the areas that are highly exposed to the sun such as forehead, cheeks, and nose bridge.

Age spots are also known as sunspots, liver spots, and solar lentigines. They are usually caused by sun exposure and ageing. Even though they’re usually found in those who are above 50 years of age, those younger can have them too if they spend a lot of time in the sun. This condition is not a health risk but simply your skin trying to protect itself from sun damage by producing melanin. However, you may want them removed for cosmetic reasons.
As we age, pigmentation can become more noticeable and difficult to tackle if left untreated for years. Here at CuraMed Medical & Aesthetics, we have a variety of treatments available that we can combine and personalise for you depending on your condition.
What are the different types of pigmentation and age spots?
1. Freckles
This is a common type of pigmentation and is mainly caused by frequent exposure to sunlight as well as genetic makeup. They’re small and flat in appearance and are usually found in young children and may also disappear as they age.

2. Sunspots
Ageing and sun exposure are the causes of this condition. Unlike freckles which may vanish with age, sunspots increase in number and are not likely to disappear. We can find mostly them on your face, arms, and legs.
3. Melasma
More commonly seen in women, this comes in the form of dark brown patches on the face. It is suspected to be caused by hormonal increases and can be worsened by UV rays. Adding on, causes such as stress, certain medication, and pregnancy can also aggravate it.

4. Seborrhoeic Keratosis
This is a part of ageing and is when pigmentation thickens. It’s usually brown or black and is slightly raised in appearance.
5. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
Injuries to the skin, such as burns or friction, or even acne, can cause this. However, as time passes, this condition may clear up, or you may be able to use topical products to help with the process.

What are the different types of treatments available?
All of our treatments are minimally invasive, with a short downtime. From lasers to peels, and even supplements, we have a wide array of possible solutions to your woes.

Q-Switched ND-Yag Laser
A non-ablative laser that is commonly used to remove age spots, freckles, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or even tattoos. This laser can reach deeper into the skin, and get rid of melanin more effectively. There is no need for numbing or anesthetic cream during the treatment as the discomfort is minimal.

BB Thulium Laser (Sub-Ablative laser)
Like the Q-Switched ND-Yag laser, the wavelength of the light energy is able to target pigmentation. However, BB thulium laser is a sub-ablative laser whereby tiny fine scabs will form over the treated area and skin renewal will take 5-7 days to complete.

Chemical Peel
Apart from exfoliating effect, chemical peel can brighten pigmented skin and promote skin renewal. Minimal downtime such as redness, dry peeling skin for 3-5 days is expected. Sun exposure should be avoided during such period and application of sun protection is essential.

Skincare Solutions
Whitening and brightening products play a major role in reversing or control melanin production on a daily basis. A combination of skincare and laser treatments helps in pigmentation removal.

Oral Supplements
Popular supplements such as Crystal Tomato and oxithion is commonly used to improve generalised skin tone and speed up removal of pigments.
